18 Jan 1998, Burbank Xena Con

Ah, Lucy. We Love Lucy. And while it was clear the poor woman was tired, she seems to also love us :). This is a good thing. The line for questions was long, too long for everyone to get a chance. The answers were marked by good humor, thoughtfulness, and respectful distance when questions strayed too close to Lucy's private self. One father got up to tell Lucy how much his daughter revered her, and then asked in a "cloaked" way that the "obscure" adult references (subtext, anyone?) be kept obscure. Lucy reminded him that Xena: Warrior Princess is an adult show and it is his job as a parent to screen and be aware of what his kids are watching. His protestation that his daughter would watch regardless wasn't met with much sympathy from much of anyone, audience and celebrity alike. She admonished him about this again when talking about another Xena look-alike episode being planned for season four (Warrior..Poet..Tramp, including Sappho!) which would certainly be including subtext......

Lucy's wit was in fine form, as usual. My favorite example paraphrased:
Fan: Lucy, I have to tell you that I think you are drop dead gorgeous.
Lucy: Well, thank you! But (turning to audience) she lies because she didn't drop dead.

The hour passed, of course, too quickly, and we were left with just the memories having been in the same room as the Warrior Princess herself *grin*. I found Lucy to be quite engaging, though people who saw her in Burbank the year before, at Lucy's first con, felt her energy was not as high this year. Given all she has done and gone through in the last year, I'd bet she just needs a really good long nap. Thanks, Lucy, for taking the time to hang with us Hard Core Nutballs.

The scanning didn't go as well as I would have liked, so the jpg's are a bit fuzzier than the actual photographs, but you can still see Lucy's radiance, smiles, thoughtful expressions, and etc etc pretty well. The thumbnails, like on other pages, are only small parts of the whole shot, not whole shots shrunken down. Let me know if you like what you see.

I had two cameras with me at the Con...the photos below were taken on high speed film in available light (the others had flash assistance) so they are a bit grainier though still sharp.
